Debate Team Awards
During the Greene County High School awards assembly, member of the GCHS Debate Team were recognized for dedication and performances during the 2018-19 school year. In the point standing among first-year debaters, Quantayia Williams and Jaila Brooks tied.. Each participated in every competition. Both continued to improve in writing position papers and debating throughout the year.

Co-Captain Haley Noland received the plaque for “Most Valuable Performer”. Haley attended every competition, turning in a position paper at The University of Alabama that received a perfect score and placing in debate at Mississippi State.
Over a three year period, Co-Captains Haley Noland and Ivan Peebles have traveled to nine competitions each, both placing multiple times. Among the other debaters, Alanna Robinson has been the most consistent in training and competing and has placed once. Mr. Burnette has received a grant, covering all expenses, to take these three students to a training program in Washington D.C. this summer.
“Close Up” is a program that brings in students from all over the country. It instructs students in leadership and debate skills while providing them with the experience of touring Washington and meeting with “insiders”. The grant is provided through the World Bank Group’s giving program, the Community Connections Campaign (CCC). In addition to the CCC, contributions were also made by individuals who wanted to give new young voters an opportunity to engage in respectful debate with their peers and understand the importance of being a global citizen.
